Different culture between China and United State

As we all know, China and American have many differences in culture. I want to talk about the differences in food culture and education styles. With the development of economic, more and more people pay attention on food and education quality. So the food and education culture has been becoming popular in our daily life. Then I want talk about why we have those differences in culture.

First, we talk about the different in diet attitudes. As we can see, in China, we will eat something with sensibility. When we choose what to eat, we will care more about the color, the smell, the taste, the shape and the device. Because our nations in the past many years, the productive level is very low, and many people are always hungry, they can’t eat enough food. So if a kind of culture treats eating as the most important thing, there will appear two situations. On one hand, this function of eating will be played to maximize, not only for surviving, but also for using it to maintain health. While Americans maybe more rationality. When they eat something, the things they care most are the nutritious value, such as the protein, the fat, the vitamin, the minerals and the carbohydrate. But it has made some problems, for example, from Los Angeles to New York, the steak is only one taste, which has no arts to speak of. As a dish, chicken is chicken, steak is steak. In America, they think the foods are used just to eat, so they often eat a large piece of meat, the whole chicken and other “hard food”. However in China, we eat something we must enjoying the taste of it. So the Chinese cooking also show great randomness on the selected materials. According to a survey of western botanists, Chinese food has more than 600 kinds of vegetables, which is six times more than it in the west.1."Gravy is perhaps the greatest difference between 'American' and 'Chinese-style' Chinese food. "Americans like lots of gravy," he continued, "and it has to match the ingredient. Take lobster: Americans like a white gravy, whereas Chinese prefer a drier sauce with black beans."That same chef advised that he prepares a darker gravy for beef to match the coloring of the meat, and a lighter colored gravy for chicken. He also said that it was common for waiters to specify whether the dish is for an American or a Chinese customer. This he advised would determine how he prepares the dish.Differences in the way foods are prepared tend to be more common in Chinatown, where there is, on balance, a large community of Chinese patrons. Outside of Chinatown, restaurants tend to prepare their dishes for western tastes unless otherwise specified.Certain restaurants have built a reputation on serving a predominantly western crowd, others cater mostly to Chinese taste. Neither is necessarily better than the other, it is more a question of the kind of food the customers want to eat. Those serving mostly western tastes would probably make better Chicken Chow Mein, Egg Rolls, or Spare Ribs. Those with more Chinese patrons tend to offer different types of dishes, such as tripe in clay pot. How you figure out which kind of restaurant is which, is not always easy." We can found Chinese food have a lot of various classes. But U.S. relative to a single type of food.

Education is the basis of a national, so I want talk about different education styles between China and United States. In China the majority of young people will get the opportunity to enjoy the 9 years’ mandatory education and very few people can go to high school or college, so the proportion of people gets educated to the whole people is quite low. The reason why our government puts so many efforts to encourage the young to get further study is mainly to improve our nation's quality. 2"Education in the United States is mainly provided by the public sector, with control and funding coming from three levels: local, state, and federal, in that order. Child education is compulsory. There are also a large number and wide variety of higher education institutions throughout the country that one can choose to attend, both publicly and privately administered.Public education is universally available. School curricula, funding, teaching, employment, and other policies are set through locally elected school boards with jurisdiction over school districts with many directives from state legislatures. School districts are usually separate from other local jurisdictions, with independent officials and budgets. Educational standards and standardized testing decisions are usually made by state governments. The ages for compulsory education vary by state. It begins from ages five to eight and ends from ages fourteen to eighteen. Compulsory education requirements can generally be satisfied by educating children in public schools, state-certified private schools, or an approved home school program. In most public and private schools, education is divided into three levels: elementary school, middle school (sometimes called junior high school), and high school (sometimes referred to as secondary education). In almost all schools at these levels, children are divided by age groups into grades, ranging from kindergarten (followed by first grade) for the youngest children in elementary school, up to twelfth grade, the final year of high school. The exact age range of students in these grade levels varies slightly from area to area."In American, education attract great attention from the government, compulsory education is 12 years,3 years longer than ours, the students not only enjoy free books but even have free lunch, from this you can see how American care about education. What is more, most of the people will not get satisfied with 12 years education, if so, they can hardly get a job. While American teachers prefer to use "ABCD" in stead of Arabic numerals to evaluate the students, in their eyes every student is good, so teachers will not grudge praise for the students, may be appreciative education is enlightened from this. But China education always tell us the score is the most important. In China, we have are great pressure on our students, if you score not well that means you will to be eliminated. Of course, if you want to choose famous college you should have good scores. After American students entering college, many of them begin to work harder than they ever did, they may stay in the library all day long, and they think it is time for their effort, or they will not get satisfied job after graduation. And on the way I want to say some thing not so important. In China a student can go to famous university as long as he has good social relationship, and he will get a gradual certificate. While if you study in America, you should pay attention, getting in by the backdoor is impossible, if you do not work hard you will never graduate successfully, and no satisfied job is waiting for you. In general, Chinese education styles pay more attention to basic knowledge, especially to math physic and chemistry. Our students really have steady basic knowledge that the US students admire very much. When we turn to see US students, we can easily find they prefer to improve social skills, including arguing, social work and teamwork, this difference lead to a phenomenon that if Chinese and American both work in a company most of the Americans will work as manager, and most of we Chinese will work as technical staffs who work for the manager.

So why we have different food culture and education styles? First I want talk about food. We know China is a multi-ethnic country, we have 56 different nation and those 56 nations still have different food culture. When the 56 ethnic groups into a big family that cause to diversified food countries. In China, we always said " the food is god", so that can found the food in China is very important, this is a kind of world view is different. But in American, people always said " the time is money", so they do not feel the need to spend time on food, such as Americans just use about 20minutes on the lunch. Americans pay more attention to the food's nutrition not taste. That is why we have different food culture, like as a kind of idea thorough popular feeling. Why we have the different education styles? That have many reasons, such as history, political elements, population and economies. But in this reasons I think the population is the most important because China have large population so the employment problem is very serious, in the school you must work very hard, because if you don't have good achievement you can't get a good job. From the history, Chinese education worst than now. In that age the women can't to go to school, and we always study mechanically, we study same things all days. So Chinese just know read book and don't know how to use book. But we have the change in this day.3"The change came in a speech made to students by the Deputy Premier, Chen yi, in peaking in August 1961, The political aspect should not always be the predominant one in all circumstances, he declared. It must take its place alongside technical and scientific knowledge. In the initial post liberation period it had been necessary to stress political education, but henceforth the emphasis must be on academic training. It was wrong for the technical colleges to spend too much time on political activity and manual work at the expense of technical training."We are now trying to put the books applied to life. But the thought need the time to change. We can found very successful way of education in the United States. The students can learn things whatever they want, because get a job is easier than China. American education system change is through revolution.4"After the Revolution, an emphasis was put on education, especially in the northern states, which rapidly established public schools. By the year 1870, all states had free elementary schools. The US population had one of the highest literacy rates at the time.[35] Private academies flourished in the towns across the country, but rural areas (where most people lived) had few schools before the 1880s.In 1821, Boston started the first public high school in the United States. By the close of the 19th century, public secondary schools began to outnumber private ones.Over the years, Americans have been influenced by a number of European reformers; among them Pestalozzi, Herbart, and Montessori." Earlier change is more conducive to the future development, the United States has done. Americans know that the only interesting things to learn better. 5"The different cultures of the United States and China are due largely to their diverse histories. The history of the United States is largely based on the principles of a Democratic government and China is based on a communist government. The presence of politics can alter the agenda of a countries educational system. Some of china’s earlier leaders perceived education as a way to keep a country moral and to have a better legal system. For this reason leaders of China concluded that it was good to hold teachers in high regard (Mingyuan, 1998). According to some Chinese leaders becoming a teacher was just a step before becoming a leader or an emperor. As in North America, in China the relationship between the student and the teacher were once equal as in the United States, but as means of the ruling class to maintain power, they enforced the teacher as an authoritative figure (Mingyuan, 1998). The teachers then prepared the students to take a civil service exam, and if they passed the exam in a convincing fashion then they could attain a higher role in society (Mingyuan, 1998). These are early implications of the strict testing policies and the valuable role of the teacher in China. In a literature review of the satisfaction of teachers in China and the United States, teachers in China were unlike American teachers in that they viewed their jobs as being something of importance or prestige, not just a simple occupation ( Ouyang and Paprock). The cultural goals of the United States are much different than that of China. "

In my opinion, the reasons which caused the different food culture and education styles in China and America are the different culture, customs, history, atmosphere, nutrition values and economic condition and so on. Although we have many different things between American and China, but we need learn from other's strong points to offset one's weakness, the culture is not important, the most important thing is we can common development because we are the person, we live in the same star that is the earth.

Second interview

Country Report

1)"Korean is an East Asian region that is currently divided into two separate sovereign states, North Korea and South Korea. Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan (East Sea), and it is separated from Taiwan to the south by the East China Sea." today I want interviewed person who is from South Korean.

About Korean history: 2)"The myth of Korea's foundation by the god-king Tangun in BC 2333 embodies the homogeneity and self-sufficiency valued by the Korean people. Korea experienced many invasions by its larger neighbors in its 2,000 years of recorded history. The country repelled numerous foreign invasions despite domestic strife, in part due to its protected status in the Sino-centric regional political model during Korea's Chosun dynasty (1392-1910). Historical antipathies to foreign influence earned Korea the title of "Hermit Kingdom" in the 19th century."

Culture:3)"In ancient Chinese texts, Korea is referred to as "Rivers and Mountains Embroidered on Silk" and "Eastern Nation of Decorum" . Individuals are regarded as one year old when they are born, as Koreans reckon the pregnancy period as one year of life for infants, and age increments increase on New Year's Day rather than on the anniversary of birthdays. Thus, one born immediately before New Year's Day may only be a few days old in western reckoning, but two years old in Korea. Accordingly, a Korean person's stated age (at least among fellow Koreans) will be one or two years more than their age according to western reckoning. However, western reckoning is sometimes applied with regard to the concept of legal age; for example, the legal age for purchasing alcohol or cigarettes in the Republic of Korea is 19, which is measured according to western reckoning."

interview report

Choice of location: I'm try to in to the library to find some interviewees, because my interviewee is a Saudi Arabia person, In my University have many Saudi Arabia people, I believe they will learning in the library, I use the practice proved that I was right. In second floor I found a Saudi Arabia person he's name is Mohammed, he was willing to be interviewed. My first interview will began.

If you interviewing an international student first challenge is have different language because we came from different country. Some interviewees are first time be interviewed make him to relaxed is also a big challenge. Polite friendliness is very important, I learned a lot of things from this interview.

Acquired knowledge: I learned more about the country for Saudi Arabia, my interviewee Very patiently explained to me his country and himself. I can't wrote all of taking about things, so I just wrote down some simple sentences and main content. Mohammed came from Saudi Arabia beautiful city—— Jeddah. That is a city located on the coast of the Red Sea and is the major urban center of western Saudi Arabia. 1)" It is the largest city in Makkah Province, the largest sea port on the Red Sea, and the second largest city in Saudi Arabia after the capital city, Riyadh. With a population currently at 3.2 million, Jeddah is an important commercial hub in Saudi Arabia. Jeddah is the principal gateway to Mecca, Islam's holiest city, which able-bodied Muslims are required to visit at least once in their lifetime. It is also a gateway to Medina, the second holiest place in Islam."

Saudi Arabia has a long history of national, they are National day and Eid al-Adha day are very important. This is a perennial hot climate characteristics of the country. In Saudi Arabia they don't have winter and snow, Mohammed very love soccer and surfing, because Jeddah is a coastal city. Saudi Arabia people for religion very persistent, they will strictly abide by their own religious rules, such as didn't eat lunch, didn't drinking alcohol.

Saudi Arabia is a mysterious and open country, because this interview I will learn more about this country. If I have chance I will go to this country one more time.

country report

About this country 1) "Saudi Arabia is the largest Arab state in Western Asia by land area, constituting the bulk of the Arabian Peninsula, and the second-largest in the Arab world (after Algeria). It is bordered by Jordan, and Iraq on the north and northeast, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates on the east, Oman on the southeast, and Yemen on the south. The Red Sea lies to its west, and the Persian Gulf lies to the east. Saudi Arabia has an area of approximately 2,250,000 km2 (870,000 sq mi), and it has an estimated population of 27 million, of which 9 million are registered foreign expatriates and an estimated 2 million are illegal immigrants. Saudi nationals comprise an estimated 16 million people."

Saudi Arabia is a Resource-rich country, The most prominent of the resource is oil. 2)Saudi Arabia has been a central pillar of the Arab world for decades. Its vast oil supplies, close ties to the United States and cash-heavy diplomacy assured its position from the years of the cold war until a wave of unrest broke in Tunisia in January 2011 and swept across the region.

In the wake of the tumult, the Saudi ruling family has had to reassess a very different world. King Abdullah began wielding his checkbook right after leaders in Tunisia and Egypt fell, seeking to placate the public and reward a loyal religious establishment. The king’s reserves, swollen by more than $214 billion in oil revenue in 2011, have insulated the royal family from widespread demands for change even while some discontent simmers.

Yet while the Saudis bought at least temporary social peace via their $130 billion public welfare program, the government is challenged by uprisings throughout the region and particularly by a belligerant Iran.
The United States has had a political alliance with the Saudi leadership that has lasted for decades, one that has become even more pivotal to Washington during the turmoil of the Arab spring and rising hostilities with Iran over that nation’s nuclear program. (Saudi Arabia and Iran are bitter regional rivals.)"

Challenges and benefits of interviewing an international student

Interviewing an international student it will make me challenges and benefits.  We know there are a lot of differences between countries no matter culture or history. We through the interview others get other countries more information that can bring us many challenges and benefits.

If you interviewing an international student first challenge is have different language because we came from different country. Some interviewees are first time be interviewed make him to relaxed is also a big challenge. Found a right one person is very important because sometimes interviewee maybe doesn’t have time.  We need Clear use common language for interview that for your spoken English is a great challenge.  1) “Polite friendliness: Be likable, but not overly intimate or personal. How many times have you witnessed an American ask someone "how are you?" only to walk away before that person even has the chance to respond? This is because we like the idea of being pleasant, but do not have the time or the desire to go too in-depth with our personal stories.” This is the beginning of an interview. Before the interview we don’t know other countries culture or history so we should avoid some sensitive topic.

Although interviewing an international student have many challenges, but also can give me some benefits. Such as know different countries culture, improve my communication skills, meet new person from different country, learn about their manners etc. Understanding the different national culture is very important to us and through the interview we can learn different countries culture. If you we  interviewing an international student we need use English however the English is not our first language so make the interviewing can help us improve communication skills. In the interview process we find that we can learn is not only the culture and we can learn a lot of things, such as this country’s food, education system, country’s environment and so on. This interviewing can give us too many benefits.

No matter challenges and benefits in interviewing an international student that all of learning experience, dare to try is the most important.

three countries

I have three favorite countries such as Italian, Saudi Arabia and Greece. This three countries represents passion, beliefs and myth. In my university have many different countries students, so if I want know different counties that is a easy thing. From the book I found some interesting things about those three countries.
Why I love Italian? Because Italian soccer is my favorite. When I was young I like Italian soccer, Italian soccer let me know sports passion, This is one of my yearning countries. "Soccer in Italy is more than just a game, its a passion. (If youre thinking that Italians treat everything with passion – from food to wine to cars to fashion – youre right. Its one of Italys charms. Really.) People are fiercely loyal to their local soccer club, and that loyalty is only put on hold when the Italian national team is playing. For sports fans, seeing a soccer game in Italy is an important part of getting to know the culture; and even for people who are only marginally interested in soccer, it can be a great experience."(1). If I have the opportunity, I will have to go to an Italian.
Second, I want talk about Saudi Arabia, because they adhere to the faith, I'm very admire. We know all Saudi Arabian are Islamic believers and Them to comply with religious rules strictly cautious. "During the holy month of Ramadan all Muslims must fast from dawn to dusk and are only permitted to work six hours per day. Fasting includes no eating, drinking, cigarette smoking, or gum chewing. Expatriates are not required to fast; however, they must not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum in public.Each night at sunset, families and friends gather together to celebrate the breaking of the fast (iftar). The festivities often continue well into the night. In general, things happen more slowly during Ramadan. Many businesses operate on a reduced schedule. Shops may be open and closed at unusual times."(2). In my country we don't have any faith, I think this is a very bad thing.
Final, I want introduction why I love Greece. In simple terms is Greek mythology deeply attracted me. No matter books or movies, as long as it is about Greek mythology, I like it very much. "At the center of Greek mythology is the pantheon of deities who were said to live on Mount Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece. From their perch, they ruled every aspect of human life. Olympian gods and goddesses looked like men and women (though they could change themselves into animals and other things) and were--as many myths recounted--vulnerable to human foibles and passions. The twelve main Olympians are:
Zeus (Jupiter, in Roman mythology): the king of all the gods (and father to many) and god of weather, law and fate
Hera (Juno): the queen of the gods and goddess of women and marriage
Aphrodite (Venus): goddess of beauty and love
Apollo (Apollo): god of prophesy, music and poetry and knowledge
Ares (Mars): god of war
Artemis (Diana): goddess of hunting, animals and childbirth
Athena (Minerva): goddess of wisdom and defense
Demeter (Ceres): goddess of agriculture and grain"(3).
A beautiful myth countries makes me revel. Although myth does not exist, but this beautiful country equally people yearning.

This three countries all very great, Although I have not been to those three countries but from the books I can know they are interesting. One day in the future, I will go to this three counties and feel the real elegant demeanour.

Plagiarism (group work)

As a group, we consulted one another and each of us went on to read what we posted in our respective blogs. After reading the blog.

Yifu Chen did the research on the different definitions that we have listed in our presentation. He found the definitions that we used, one fromhttp://www.plagiarism.org/plag_article_what_is_plagiarism.html 9/11/12  another one from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism 9/11/12

Mohamed shared a very recent  case of plagiarism that was done by a famous journalist of CNN (Fareed Zakaria ) .He got his information from the New York Times website where there was an article wrote on this case . “A scandal Threatens Zakaria's Image as a Media Star" from the New York Times written by CHRISTINE HAUGNEY, August, 19, 2012.

Yang Qu shared his personal views on plagiarism in china and gave us an example from an associate professor in Tong Ji University. http://www.forbes.com/2010/05/26/china-cheating-innovation-markets-economy-plagiarism.html  9/11/12 . Yang Qu found during his research that the goal of college education is to teach students how to produce original thoughts and analyze ideas. Plagiarism adds nothing new and does not show that the student has learned nothing.http://www.ehow.com/facts_5972805_plagiarism-important - issue-college_.html 9/11/12

Yifu Chen and Mohamed worked together to find different ideas on how to avoid plagiarism. They did some research on Leo that helped them find some good examples on how to avoid plagiarism. As a group, we decided to list two different ways on how to avoid plagiarism.

The goal of our group was to bring awareness about plagiarism as we found it as a form of crime, but it is viewed differently in different parts of the world. In poor countries and some countries where laws are not enforced, it goes unpunished .While in developed countries, there’s a financial aspect that is linked to it. People found guilty of plagiarism in America and other western countries have to pay a fine and pay a monetary compensation to the one they stole the idea from.

In poor countries , there’s a high level  of illiteracy and people tend to worry more about how to find what to eat than paying attention to who has copied someone’s else idea .
We found the resources very helpful, as they helped us get some accurate information that we cross referenced with other information and had a better idea of what we were trying to achieve as a goal for our group.

During the research that we have conducted, we came across so many valuable data that we sometime didn’t know which one to use .We consulted one another and ended up choosing the one’s that better reflect the goal that we were trying to achieve.

yifu chen

I'm writing a research paper want to avoid plagiarism.

what is the plagiarism?

The plagiarism means copy another person's exact words or summarize someone else's ideas. If you write some paper have other people's ideas or paragraph that is plagiarism. Use anther person's present facts or charts it also plagiarism.

If you think plagiarism is not important that is not true.

because:1.If you plagiarism it has serious academic consequences.

2.and plagiarism also break the law.

so how to avoid plagiarism or what things is not plagiarism?

              1.become informed.
If you said "I don't know I'm plagiarism someone"it is not established, you can found many information from the website
such as MLA or APA. put you own paper in this website you can found you are plagiarism or not.

2.Don't take things left to the last minute
I think this is very important, sometimes you don't have enough time to finish your homework or paper, at this time you
think may be I can copy someones paper or just some paragraph. This is very dangerous because you will be plagiarism.
just thinking if you have enough time you can use your own words finish your work. do not think your professors can't
found you not plagiarism, he can use internet found what things you copy it.

3.Explain where is this source from
This is not plagiarism. of course you can use other people's sentence but you need use quotation marks mark this sentence and tell the reader who write this sentence and where is this from at last.
